Pros

Nothing really comes to mind after a decade plus.

Cons

Work life balance in practice is an email sent out before holidays. It's lip service and if you expect a standard work week you will be very disappointed. Management is insular and parochial, with a favoritism very much in evidence but not based on actual ability. If you love the stress of multiple layers of management, all dropping "must do" projects with concurrent timelines that require more man-hours than available staff, this is the job for you. You may even get a framed certificate for your efforts to go along with your 3% yearly raise for exceptional work.

Pros

If you have the support, you can learn a lot but that’s few and far between.

Cons

Where to begin. The nurse Extern position is just a PCT position. The only time you are lucky enough to learn anything or do anything related to the “job description” is if a nurse is nice enough to want to teach you. In the two years I was there, I only had two nurses that let me do anything nursing related. The culture is negative. Forget raises. I got 10 cents after 90 days and never saw another raise again even though I had “above average” on my performance reviews. We were lied to about disaster pay during Hurricane Ian. I took their EKG class to pick up extra shifts and ended up working that position constantly because they had no staff. In the end that was a benefit for me as it got me away from the horrible management of the floor I was on. Oh, and when I received me last W-2, they had charged me for benefits I never received and was told I didn’t qualify for. If you clocked out before a certain time at the end of your shift, you were docked 15 minutes off your paid. I could go on forever with all the mess they put me through.

Pros

Fairly diverse network so finding specialists in the area/in network is fairly easy

Cons

As an outpatient physician, focus from upper management was mainly on numbers and getting people through the door rather than on quality of care. This led to a lot of frustration for the physicians, as well as patients. Worked a lot of hours, barely home, no real support from management.
