Pros

Job Security, that's all there is.

Cons

There is a reason there are frequent bullying surveys. All the things they say you will get as a civil servant such as support, training etc.. you wont. No one helps you on board in what is a very complex business environment and you will be held responsible for won't you did not do even though no one told you anything about it. Pressure piled on pressure. Aggressive managers. Long hours lots of unrealistic and unfair pressure. You will be 1 of very very few civil servants working with and managed by contractors on far more than you many of whom do far less work than you and working with suppliers who treat their staff better than you are treated by the HO and who are also earning more than you! Endless communications about the culture and values that bare no resemblance to your every day reality.

Pros

Great work life balance Work on some of the most important and high profile issues affecting the UK

Cons

Low pay compared to private sector Top tier management speaks to lower grades about changes, diversity and inclusion but middle management seem unwilling/unable to implement these much needed ways of working and recruitment Old-fashioned ideas of working a grade for a set time holds many employees back from rightful career progression

Pros

- You'll make some really good friends with colleagues, most of whom are VERY passionate people who want to make a difference in society. - It's nice to put 'Home Office' on your CV - There are a vast amount of career opportunities

Cons

- Job mis-sold, 'Asylum Decision Maker' turns out to be a mediocre administrator doing menial tasks - Stats, stats, stats - Obsessed with hitting stats as opposed to delivering a quality service - Bullying and victimisation by senior managers to lower grade staff is commonplace - Good luck with receiving training to do your job - You won't get it! - Weeks and weeks to get your I.T. username, in the meantime you are stuck with menial tasks - If you think different from the status quo, good luck - because you'll need it when you're constantly having to justify yourself - They hate being challenged when you identify something wrong
