Pros

Flexible working employer , opportunities to gain experience at higher levels although not paid or recognised for it, but does give experience for CV portfolio Good diverse employer and work life balance. Good leadership in parts of the Home office with a drive and passion to be committed to good public service. If you put yourself forward and design an appropriate business case, opportunities to shadow and second to other business areas.

Cons

Lack of investment in career development, as long as you are a self starter and willing to do with ground work yourself , you can get self develop. Putting inexperienced people in critical key roles to business due to staff shortages and a need to meet deadlines. No incentive to deliver outstanding performance.

Unconscious Bias

Pros

There are expected standards of behaviour and mostly people are professional. If you like a comfy desk job, you know how to manage upwards and allay managers fears when it comes to setting unrealistic expectations-then this is the place to work.

Cons

However, there is a lot of unconscious bias when it comes to applying for a job or going for promotion. You have to become an expert in writing answers to competency based interview questions and preparing for interview questions. Also, if you apply via Manpower (their recruitment agency) then forget about having the opportunity to demonstrate your ability or potential - you have to complete and pass a psychometric test before you can even submit a completed application form.
