Great company that puts culture first

Pros

- Hopper has deliberately built a successful operating culture around single-threaded ownership. Strategy and decision-making are decentralized which enables every employee to have a visible impact on the company. - And unlike at other companies, the culture is embraced and modeled from the CEO down - There are no politics at play. If you perform your job well you will get promoted. - Innovative products and technology that evolve rapidly - Challenging and high impact business and tech problems to solve every day - Team is very passionate about the mission and product - Stock options granted widely - Employees can live anywhere in the world as the company is now 100% virtual - Company is super data-driven. Executives can't and don't override quantitative proof with gut feel decisions

Cons

- The hiring process is intense and lengthy. It needs to be streamlined - Mediocrity is not tolerated (for long). Not the company for people who want to coast. - Product Development pace is fast so tech debt is piling up. The company will have to pay the piper eventually.

Pros

Engineering talent level is very high. Lots of OG engineers still here, with tons of institutional knowledge. They have promoted and hired well over the years - senior people range from effective at the low end to totally brilliant at the high end. Tech stack a nice mix of enterprise/experimental, you get a chance to work with and learn new things without too much churn or getting caught up in trends. Day-to-day work tends to be with a relatively small and well-developed set of tools. I have never gone anywhere in this company and found the people running things to be incompetent or lazy - sometimes minor concerns get postponed, but that's understandable because the people have their eyes on the prize. Incredible product shipping cadence leading to unbelievable growth despite headwinds from the pandemic. Solid comp, great benefits, huge personal/professional growth opportunities

Cons

Company has scaled fast, and that has been very challenging. Frequent re-orgs to deal with all this change can be confusing. There is some amount of office politics, esp in certain units. Engineering tends to be fairly well-insulated from this. This is not a low-pressure job - the amount of work is huge, and there is never enough time to get everything done. We survive only by prioritizing ruthlessly. Remote work means you have to be diligent about maintaining your own work/life balance. Managers tend to be very supportive of this, however. Covid layoffs were a real challenge, as you can tell from other reviews here. Looking back from 2021, a 40% staffing cut seems like an overreaction but at the time we had no idea where the bottom was. Leadership has done a lot since to become more transparent. Proof is in the pudding though - company didn't just survive the pandemic, it thrived.

Pros

I've only been here a few months but Hopper is already shaping up to be one of the best places I've ever worked. 1/ Awesome Colleagues - super engaged, fun to hang with, incredibly helpful (especially to new hires), incredibly committed to providing the best travel experience out there. 2/ Awesome Mission - Hopper's mission of 'making travel less painful, less stressful, more rewarding and more financially achievable' really resonates with me because I love to travel; I actually use the product I work on all the time. And to top it all off, for every booking on Hopper, the company pays for the planting of enough trees to offset the carbon footprint of your itinerary. It's pretty incredible to be working at a company that actually is taking climate change seriously and doing something about it that's more than just a volunteer day on some random spring afternoon. Hopper is actually **aligning business success with saving the planet**. 3/ Awesome Time - Hopper has hit its stride. We are growing hand-over-fist across the board. We added 100 employees and many millions to our run rate in just the 3 short months I've been here, and it is clear that we're just getting started.

Cons

This is a fast-paced, late-stage, hyper-growth start-up. Things move fast and while I myself have not experienced anything adverse as a result, I can see how this environment might not be for everyone. Somewhat relatedly, it is definitely clear that senior management has internalized a lot of the criticism it's gotten on Glassdoor reviews and has made a lot of changes in their wake.
