Pros

Hopper seems really committed to the unlimited time off policy. Extra holidays are announced often - Truth & Reconciliation Day and Remembrance Day suddenly appeared as holidays this year. Everyone who works at Hopper seems really smart. Business leaders are really on top of their stuff and understand both the technology space and the business space. Everyone here understands that even simple things can have unintended complications when integrating with an established tech ecosystem.

Cons

Lack of automation and pipeline tooling means you can lost a whole day to trying to get your work deployed, or can spend a long time waiting for others to get things merged and deployed before you can get anything merged and deployed. Since work-from-home became the norm it can be easy to not feel connected to the company at large.

Pros

Work from home setup Unlimited vacation Stock Options Enormous transparency from leadership

Cons

You need to be able to self motivate Company culture/values does not come across easily - they are there and are acted upon, but being remote, it is hard to ''feel'' them.

Autonomy and Freedom

Pros

The best part about working at hopper is that they have separate verticals which are more or less smaller start ups within the larger startup. This gives you a lot of freedom, less bureaucracy, and lots to work on. This can be seen as a good or a bad thing. Engineering itself is a mixed bag. Like most startups, there’s a conscious decision to take on technical debt to iterate and build fast. However overall the engineering is not too difficult to deal with and on the whole quite fun to work on. Engineering practices and Test coverage is pretty good. There is an active movement towards cleaning up some of the less nice parts.

Cons

Internal training of more junior engineers is a high priority. You’re excepted to perform and easily let go of you underperform.
