the people - dedicated and hard working the world over; focus was on the task at hand, not self serving posturing

Cons

fragmented leadership - conflicting directions rather than focused efforts, decision-makers looked to be more interested in an immediate result rather than a proper mix of immediate and long term.

Pros

When I started (30 years ago) it was a great company with respect for the individual and the promise of a great retirement package. By the time I was ready to retire, those benefits were all gone. While I didn't get increases the last 5 years, I was still happy with my salary.

Cons

IBM, unfortunately, is run by accountants and therefore there is no long term planning but short term ways to show a profit (through layoffs). There are unreasonable workloads, deadlines and managers. No money for education and most new announcements are to inform you of something else being taken away.

Pros

Great exposure to large corporate matrix. Lots of opportunities to learn both through internal training and collaboration with other groups throughout the company. It is truly global and you get to meet a lot of very smart professionals from all over the world. Traveling was a perk but is harder to come by in these difficult economic times.

Cons

Things seem to (like in so many large corps) driven excessively by qtr to qtr profits and share price. Rather then take a bad quarter for the trade-off of a longer term growth/investment for the future. This can sometimes have a negative effect on morale.
