Pros

There's a lot of new technologies to learn. From all things AWS to "newer" languages like Go. Learn what you can, and then find a better opportunity elsewhere.

Cons

I cannot stress this enough. Be very wary of any opportunity for growth in this company if you are in Technology. Due to continued declining revenues from its Telecom business, the company has made a strategic decision to shift its software development overseas. This process has been happening for well over a year. We have seen our scrum teams grow in sizes from 7-8 members to well over 15 people, with half of them from overseas. The economic reasons for this is hard to refute. For the salary of a state-side developer, you can get 2.5 developers overseas. Morale at this company is at an all-time low. A major reason for this is that upper management have started using performance reviews as a tool to justify laying off of higher paid employees. For the last 4 quarters, there is a steady process of laying off US-based employees, with replacements coming from overseas. Many of IDT's brightest talents have already left. Senior management is playing a very risky game. On the one hand, they need to reduce costs. However, they are already running into the risk of losing their domain knowledge experts--many who have already left the company. At some point...you will end up with a telecom / fintech company that collapses under itself due to absence of technical domain expertise. If you are considering a technical job at IDT, I would tell you that you will learn a lot. But don't expect to be around for more than one or two years. I would expect the footprint of the technology department on the US-side to be very small over the next 2 years---mostly technical leaders managing the workload of the offshore resources.

Thank you for your service to IDT for over 5 years. We wish your observations were different, but we understand why these are your observations and we are working hard to improve our policies and the technologies we work with. We are making radical changes in our technology department and hiring many people here and abroad. In the past year we have hired a new CTO, implemented Agile software development methodology, and instituted flexible work policies for our software engineers. At the same time, we have given our employees opportunities to learn new skills and adapt to the new technologies we are using. We try very hard through coaching and training to guide our employees toward success. You are correct in saying that technology staff will learn a lot working here. There is a lot of innovation happening at IDT, and we are thankfully in a position where we need to expand the size of our teams to meet the demands of our multiple high-growth divisions. We are supplementing our existing teams with offshore talent to bolster our ability to deliver new products more rapidly and, yes, it does make economic sense as well. We have made excellent progress towards our goal of becoming an agile technology firm. Unfortunately, during this transition period we have had to let go of employees who were unable to master the new technologies. While many of these positions were eliminated because of performance, our CEO has made the decision to offer an updated severance policy to employees impacted by this transition, including performance related. IDT has always had a strong commitment to its employees and their families. We believe it shows in the very long tenure of our employees who have decided to work here when many are talented enough to work anywhere! We truly believe that our most important assets come in the morning and leave at night. We appreciate your contributions to IDT these past 5 years. And we very much appreciate your honest assessment of our company. As you can see, our CEO Shmuel Jonas, has responded to your review in our company-wide Slack channel.
