Pros

Well organised and structured as expected for a GMP facility. Sophisticated systems in place to track and deal with client projects.

Cons

Where to start, as a new hire I came in expecting some semblance of training and an interest in my development. You are made to sit around for months wondering your purpose with not much / no guidance. At the very least assign someone to train up the new hire. And when work is given on occasion it is expected that you should know everything and perform these duties correctly without the proper training. Any mistake made no matter how small will be penalised with no real explanation as to the mechanisms behind it, this perpetuates the problem as without the knowledge to get it correct next time around the problem will repeat itself. I also knew the Salary would be low and rightfully so as I am an intern, this was not a concern for me as I came here to learn but I feel like I'm sitting around wasting my time and the companies. Of course it will take time to trust a new hire with the equipment and various GMP procedures but it is at the very least efficient to have a plan in place to prepare and train up the new hire so that they don't sit around clueless. I'm pretty sure training will not cost much and will be useful when work starts to come in.

Pros

Things started off good, everyone was nice and helpful.

Cons

There is a great deal of animosity and pettiness displayed by the permanent staff. Making a very hostile work environment. After my initial training, which went well, but it was all downhill after that. They turned me over to a “supervisor” for additional training in another area. Unfortunately, her communication skills were terrible. She could not convey the more complex aspects of the new tasks to be done. So I was left with getting the answers from colleagues .

Pros

You can transfer practically anywhere, insurance is fairly decent, corporate perks are nice (perks at work), endless education available, profit sharing

Cons

Recruiters rarely reply...I've begun to e-mail the hiring managers directly, pay not comparable to others in the same position/market, sign-on bonuses never on time, or disbursed as promised, training may be lacking, upward mobility in the region you'd like to reside in may not be available as positions tend to be created for specific individuals, Hiring process so slow you may have to repeat your screenings. I've seen candidates give up.

Pros

You get a lot of support from all of the other people that work in your department. Almost everyone has worked in every position and you are rotated around so even after you are "signed off" of training in a certain position you can always ask for help if you do not understand something or are unsure what to do. I have found that it is better to ask for help/clarification of the next step if you are unsure of yourself than to just go with what you believe to be correct and find out later that you were wrong. This will only make the department redo/reschedule the test for the patients which makes the client/hospital that ordered the test wait that much longer for an answer. Sometimes the tests are not expected to have a very fast turn around but you do get "STAT" tests that are expected to be expedited and for the client to get a response as soon as they possibly can. If you mess up on these tests it is only going to make someone else have to redo them and for the client to have less of a chance of asking this lab to do their stat testing again in the future. One last thing I like is that we are often sent "test" samples ourselves that are sent to 2 or 3 other labs and the results are compared together to see if how the labs compare. You will not know this at the time so that the samples are not treated any differently but later someone will come along and let you know that you participated in this exercise and I think that this is a good thing to do on a continual basis.

Cons

The learning curve can be quite steep for some positions and you are expected to be able to pick things up rather quickly no matter what. When you first come on board there are around 400 SOPs that you are expected to become familiar with for the testing of different drugs from different sample types along with over 200 different "lessons". This can be quite daunting but after you finish this task it is not so bad, you will have to keep up with changes to SOPs and you are expected to do 12 CE credits per year but depending on your prior knowledge, these "classes" are not that hard to do and most professional jobs have some kind of CE expectation these days anyways, even automotive repair.
