Pros

Working at lowes is a team effort there is a since of shared responsibility for labor from dept man on down. You will have opportunities for advancement if you work hard and master your current position. You will be treated with respect most of the time, and morale is still high even in the recession. compensation is good and there are health and 401k fund matching benefits . I is a far environment and you will receive feedback good and bad when there is an audit of any kind going on in your department. oh and they like to hire for senior managment from the inside.

Cons

not enough time not enough employees, too many store processes to keep up with on the day to day. I think a more stream lined store process and a massive computer upgrade would make a huge difference in the stores. I know zone managers manage by telling not by doing but in a recession I think some one has to pick up the slack when most of us are maxed out for time management as it is . The only solution is overtime wich were not allowed to use. thats my one and only rant with lowes once you learn to work within the system

Pros

advancement pace/availability according to personal work ethic and merit// benefits package retirement plan. For any person seeking a challenge of learning new information (ie: home improvement areas and topics) and applying it to a big box retail environment servicing customers both knowledgeable of product and not, this is the company for you!! Lowe's is a workplace that allows a person to grow through interaction in an atmosphere of continuous training, positive/negative feedback, diversity, and ever-changing product lines. Any person who is determined to grow and mentor those around them will achieve senior level management within a period of five years or less. Opportunity is the key benefit asset to this workplace.

Cons

retail work schedule takes priority to personal life

Pros

Lowe's does offer relatively affordable insurance, along with a matched 401k up to 100% for the first 3% and 50% up to 6%. Recently Lowe's has added holiday pay that can be used as vacation time in addition to preexisting vacation time that can also be reimbursed at the end of the fiscal year. The employee stock plan is excellent since you can by shares at 15% below market value, as well as employee discount.

Cons

Morale has always been an issue, at my store. Some wages are skewed such as a sales specialist earning more in salary then a department manager. Salaries are very low at the department management level. When I became a department manager for a short while the starting salary was only 22,100.00 which is simply unlivable. Compensation is most definitely Lowe's Achilles heal, most associates do not make more then 25,000 a year, and the only associates receive any real sales incentive outside of senior management are sales specialist who earn regular commission. The Lowe's management at my store is weak as well. Though I do like our store manager, out Zone managers are incompetent and avoid conflict by allowing obvious fraudulent refunds or using associates outside their zones for task, in order to not take away from the staffing on there end. My final complaint is the Lowe's structural ladder. Though I agree staffing is based on level of store income, its is simply in efficient to add and subtract management for the hierarchy, there should be one basic employment level layout.
