Pros

Find the right team and you can get by doing very little real work.

Cons

Some teams don't care about things that happen outside their team (and will happily throw you under the bus when they asked you to do something yet gave you unreasonable deadlines to actually do it). Ironically, "cross team collaboration" was listed internally as the worst performing area within Engineering. Plenty of internal "marketing" about how good Cisco is doing for its employees (with superfluous "AMAs") yet they often don't listen to complaints submitted (or even read Glassdoor).

Working at Meraki during the Covid-19 pandemic

Pros

Meraki has shown up in the best way during this emergency time. The company hasn't done a lot of bragging about the ways that they have supported people, so I'm going to do the bragging for them. First with their employees. We received the message to mandatory work from home a full week before SF county announced shelter. Leadership has been very supportive and we've been told many times to prioritize family and well-being. Overall, managers seem to be flexible with the staff, knowing that people have kids and other responsibilities. My manager specifically has been overly flexible knowing that I have a young kid at home and can't work my normal 8 hours. With our vendors and suppliers and the community, Meraki is making sure they are still being paid even though offices are closed. The goal is to make sure all the companies that support us are still around when we recover. We are donating meals to nonprofits and hospitals. Networking equipment was also sent to hospitals. With our customers, special arrangements are being made on licenses and renewals too. Lastly, our leaders have been pretty transparent. We had an AMA a few days ago and it seemed like no topic was off limits.

Cons

This is more of a con on Covid-19 but things are changing so fast that it's hard to keep up. There are probably 4 emails a week from Cisco, Meraki, HR, or others about a change to some process because of what's happening. I know people are working hard on comms.

Pros

If you are able to build and ship features quickly that impress product management (even if they have critical bugs present), you'll do quite well.

Cons

If you care about building and designing features the right way (while paying off technical debt), you'll be sadly disappointed. A few engineers were hired to be technical leaders but quickly left when they found out they would actually be doing little leadership and instead be implementing a number of the features themselves. Even the features that do get built have little architecture or design behind them (and instead are rushed out the door to say "we shipped it" and make a sale rather than delivering something that is stable and well-built). We were recently told that the dinner and transportation benefits would be dramatically reduced. A number of engineers voiced valid concerns, especially since some of the benefits were promised to them as part of their offer letters. Instead of listening to them, we were instead invited to take a training course on "How to Manage Change in the Workplace".
