Pros

It's dependent on the size, but the site I worked at had good work-life balance and relatively challenging work.

Cons

Layoffs may occur during rough times.

Pros

The work itself is very interesting and it's amazing seeing how complex the parts we make are and how it all comes together. Work is challenging but not too difficult. Pay is standard compared to defense contractors, not the best but solid.

Cons

The business is struggling to acquire contracts so work is dwindling at the Space Park site at an alarming rate with no positive forecast in the future. The site is in a no hire no fire mode right now, which is understandable, but it is making a long term career here both risky in terms of a potential layoffs and limiting career growth in general if you want to climb the ladder. Leadership and upper management also have done a poor job retaining our best talent, most of our best people leave to competititors and the knowledge they have is not being passed down or retained in any way. Being a good employee here is not rewarded so I can't blame them for leaving.

Bureaucracy heavy

Pros

Relaxed environment, core hours are very reasonable, no micromanaging. It is usually really easy to apply for another job internally and do that job. Unlike other companies you only have to hold the same position for 6 months, which is not bad at all if you find it is a terrible fit. Generally easy to talk to a manager if you have an interest in another department. Generally don’t care if you WFH on occasion for whatever reason. Almost impossible to get fired from here unless you are laid off. You can coast in this job no problem. You will get a raise every year, sure it’s not great but at least it is promised. Some companies do not give you a raise every year.

Cons

“Good boys club” culture is still circulating and this will take years to remove. People who work hard and have the technical aptitude do not get recognized for their contributions. People who are friends with management get promoted and recognized, even if they do not contribute. The culture in the Chandler facility is extremely toxic, abusive, and lacks professionalism. This is a big reason I had to leave the environment. You cannot confide in your management to help solve issues that are within their scope, because they will use that against you. I have never worked somewhere where the lead or manager will talk negatively/gossip about their own team. Depending on your group, you could end up being treated more like a slave rather than a respectable employee. Examples include Configuration and Document Control, Data Transfer Agents, IT, & Systems Engineering. These departments experience levels of abuse that should not be tolerated by the Program Management of Chandler including contacting their personal phones off hours. The turnover here is high and there is a reason. Recently, the company had layoffs and have no idea how to hire the right people. They will continue to lose great employees because of the way they treat people.

Pros

Great MechE experience, training and certification provided in some skills and courses. You essentially are doing the same work and are assigned tasks of a full time MechE. Here, I learned a lot about aerospace and their standards. They will offer you a return offer if they like you and your work.

Cons

I did not get a return offer, probably because of the NGI layoff being around that time.
