Pros

- Product, salesforce mainly - Office - handful of quality people

Cons

Where to begin? This is a company that has steadily declined in every facet since I began. Initially you may not see some of the warning signs but they start to emerge the more you look. Starting with the CEO, he preaches transparency and trust but couldn’t operate outside these values any more if he tried. They try to convey a message that he’s approachable (check out the “one minute with Sam” video on YouTube) but that just isn’t the case, he could be right next to you and not a say a word, and when you walk past him he refuses to make eye contact. He inspires no leadership and dressed up as a fired employee last Halloween. Our CFO is probably the most unqualified person I have ever met and is a real life version of lord Farquaad. Proven leaders have left over the years and it is beginning to become apparent why. Tons of dead weight that are essentially tenured employees at this point. I’ve never been in a cult but imagine this is what it feels like.

Own Company Response

One of our core values as a company is, “We build trust through transparency.” Our Executive Leadership (ELT) Team demonstrates this value in all that they do. For example, we host monthly “Ask Me Anything” panels as part of our All Hands, which our ELT participates in and answers any and all employee questions live. They welcome anyone who would like to discuss anything further to reach out to them directly. In addition, each month, our CEO hosts an ask me anything session with every new hire that joins OwnBackup. We lead with transparency, and our leaders are committed to open communication. We find the best talent available for each and every role at OwnBackup. This is especially true for our leaders, who are each hand selected for the job, inclusive of our CFO. Another one of our core values is, “We take our work seriously, but not ourselves,” so if you have any other thoughts, questions, or Shrek references, please share them with your HRBP. Thank you.

Pros

Great Product Can make good money depending on segment and territory

Cons

Everything except the product If you don't get a good territory, no matter the segment (SMB, Commercial, or Enterprise), it will be extremely difficult to succeed. Those who have the Bay Area, NYC, Boston do well in every segment. If you don't get one of those territories, or maybe other large cities like Chicago or Atlanta.... Good luck... One of their values is "Build Trust Through Transparency", but that couldn't be further from the truth. They lie about everything. Forced Return to Office (3+ days for most of company, 5 days week for others) except for when they wanted to do mass layoffs, then it was okay for everyone to work from home and they fired everyone behind a computer screen Showed zero remorse for lay offs and never really showed like they cared about their employees. Felt like a number as it got very corporate very fast. They are just worried about going public and will do anything to anyone to make that happen. They over-hired, especially across the sales org and fired people with 3, 4, and 5 months of tenure, never even giving them a chance or opportunity to succeed with an unrealistic quota. It's very political and people go places that play the corporate game. Leadership is weak at the top as they over projected revenue for 2022 and then about 20% of their employees around the world had to pay for it. Pay is below average for most roles and super stingy about negotiating a higher salary. Also, they say unlimited PTO, but that's not entirely true as you will be judged for the amount of time you take off.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your experience with OwnBackup. We are sorry to hear that you were impacted by our decision to eliminate certain roles throughout the business. While we’ve grown significantly year over year, the world has changed much more dramatically and as a result we have had to make a strategic organizational realignment. While this decision was extremely challenging, we remain positive about our future. In terms of salary and PTO, we offer competitive salaries that are above the market average and offer unlimited PTO to ensure that everyone’s work/life balance is respected and considered. We wish you the best of luck in your next chapter and thank you for your contributions to OwnBackup.
