Pros

- teamwork isn't just a buzzword here - most IT workers have freedom to work remotely from almost anywhere in US - decent profit sharing and stock grants for senior individual contributor roles - very diverse workforce, and they're not bothered if you're over 40 unlike many technology firms (yes, with thousands of developers Home Depot *is* a technology firm as well as one of the world's largest retailers) - management usually walks the talk

Cons

- it's retail, so expect to work hard so customers can get what they need now - pretty pitiful PTO, 2 weeks until 5 years, don't get a 4th until 15, only six paid holidays annually (see: it's retail) - health benefits are pricey and not terribly comprehensive - over-reliance on contractors and pricey talent from other firms (Ernst and Young is everywhere in the Security organization) and stubborn refusal to staff support roles - you'll always have more work than you can complete

My time at the Depot

Pros

Kept busy, got to move around to different registers around the store

Cons

The management does not care about their employees. I was at the top level for cashiers and I was liked by all my customers because of the attention to detail I would bring with me. But that didn’t matter to upper management, when I went through a brief period of depression and anxiety because of a divorce that I was going through, I started being five or ten minutes late for work. I know it looked bad on me but it was a struggle to get out of bed and be productive. Even though I would be late from time to time I would always stay later to make up for lost time and I never let my customers know how depressed I was. I was always on my A game. They never asked if I needed some help or anything like that, they only said that I was fired for being late. And they did this at the end of my shift that I stayed over for to cover the front end since my replacement called out. I think that was the worst part about them letting me go, they made sure that they got everything out of me before they let me go.

Pros

There are absolutely no benefits to working at Home Depot unless you like working for minimum wage with measly $0.25 annual raises.

Cons

Employees are paid minimum wage with twenty five cent annual raise. Home Depot needs to pay their employees more than minimum wage and provide more than twenty five cent annual raises. Management in incompetent at all levels. Training is horrible and doesn't prepare employees for customer service. Customers expect more knowledge from employees. Home Depot doesn't prepare employees to answer customer product questions. I've been with Home Depot for four years and I barely make more than minimum wage. It's absolutely a shame that the only decent raise I'm getting is from the state (minimum wage increased to $12.50 in state I work in). Home Depot needs to reward their employees with more than minimum wage and a measly $0.25 annual raise. Also, Home Depot does not reward employees for learning more departments or getting a forklift or reach truck license. There are no incentives for learning different departments.
