Pros

Colleagues at DI level and below are most of the time very competent, helpful and overall have a good attitude to work, making project work enjoyable.

Cons

Attrition; upper management staff all think they are semi-gods, not bothering with the "lower staff" (despite us running the business). Since Credit Suisse integration, innovation and proper business is at stand still. Anything (or anyone) unrelated to integration gets killed. All top mgmt wants to hear is about Credit Suisse, as their juicy bonuses are directly linked to it, while us lower staff won't see a dime of it. Performance management and salary transparency is non existent. No help from direct manager or HR to steer or develop my career. Promotion is a political process, not driven by objective target measurement. Project reporting is ridiculous: reports of reports , with some "portfolio mgmt" teams imposing deadline and chasing for status reports and RAG statuses that no-one reads nor understands, bringing unnecessary work and friction to the whole. Benefits have been lowered more and more. Nothing else than free coffee at the office and cheap sunrise abos. Infrastructure is really lame, with unusable systems, very slow and overall archaic solutions. IT support is so-so. Working from home is not officially refrained, but we feel the pressure of coming back to the office even if not officially told, by for example having so much remote login issues.

Pros

UBS has a great reputation, but the reality of working in CDIO London is very different. Flexible on hours and working days in the office for most teams.

Cons

Sadly, because employees have been told they're the best, they think they can act rudely, and often borderline inappropriate. I had to say to a line manger 5 times I am not comfortable in a 121 situation with them before they allowed me to leave a call following them making up lies that I had email proof of. Comments including 'you should go on sit on the naughty stair because you've been a naughty boy' were heard more than once. One week in the office (3 days in) in a packed office, not one person held a conversation. Often people overlap on work, and quite regularly, one team have cancelled or moved on to something else, without informing other teams, teams work in massive silos and nobody shares information unless it goes all the way up the management chain to come back down with management quite often having a job for the sake of a job and to decide what information gets to where.

Pros

I can't think of any.

Cons

- To write a single line of code you need to join UBS workspace then to another Windows VM (basically two nested Windows machines) - UBS workspace will log you out of VM when you're inactive and you will have to do 6-7 steps again to connect to workspace and VM - Sometimes business people don't know what they are doing, thus you do not have clear requirements or mocks - A lot of security layers literally kill your passion for software development - There is dedicated team who develops React component library for internal use but all they do is to import and overwrite styles of Ant Design - This makes hard to use those components and basically I would say those developers are waste of money, you can use Ant Design and assign those developers to another projects instead of hiring new ones - You cannot even update VSCode because of security layers - You don't know anyone else besides your line manager - And many more...
