Pros

paid training while you get your license

Cons

They encourage you to partner with senior advisors when you go after accounts. Then you have to split the revenue 50%. So you do 100% of the work for 50% of the money. No one will help you, mentor you, accompany you on a call, or answer questions without claiming 50% of the revenue for life. Also, they dump accounts on you that generate no revenue - they sold them something years ago, it pays nothing, but the client calls you all the time. And new advisors get zero support or help from admin/clerical people, yet they don't teach you how to do any of it yourself. You spend all your time chasing down admin stuff, while the clerks are outside the building smoking cigarettes. Management does not care about the new people, only the older big producers, and helping them get 50% of everything you do, so they don't leave and go to another firm.

Pros

I joined UBS after graduating from Columbia. I had interned at another firm but I preferred the people at UBS and the fact that I could get a good work/life balance here. I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibility and exploring the wider opportunities here later in my career. I’ve found that wherever you are based, you can do interesting, high-quality work.

Cons

Conclusion Be scientific Do as much research as you can. Talk to people who work for companies that interest you and see if it’s a place that is right for you. You need to think about what’s most important – is it work/life balance, early responsibility, a commitment to talent development or something else? Make sure all your boxes are ticked. Another good exercise is to measure how happy people are in their jobs. If it’s a good firm, they will be.

Pros

Good experience, ability to learn many things in a brief period of time.

Cons

Major sweatshop - 18+ hour days very common, often work one or both days on the weekend, very little respect shown to junior people by senior bankers.
