Pros

The promotion opportunity to Lieutenant Colonel is excellent. The ethics and integrity of the people you work with is top-notch. The security clearance opens doors to jobs with defense contractors when you get out of the Air Force.

Cons

Even though we're nine years into the current conflict, the Air Force still can't get it's personnel strength numbers right. You can expect to be deployed away from home for at least six months of every year. This doesn't include any spin-up training time that may or may not be at your home station. It's extremely hard on families (especially kids and spouses with questionable fidelity skills). So, if you want to be an Air Force intelligence officer, don't buy a house, don't buy a dog, don't sign a service contract (e.g. cell phone), don't get a serious boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse, don't have kids, don't start an advanced degree, and don't buy a nice car/truck you'll never get to drive. Instead, rent those things (except the boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/kids) for the four months you are at home.

Pros

Working for the USAF will gives me a sense of pride for our country. To know that my specific duties help support the war fighter gives me a huge sense of pride. Most of the people you work with as an engineer are bright and loving people.

Cons

The GS pay system is the worst pay scale known to man. If you work hard, you get a raise. If you dont work at all, you get a raise. The USAF is the epitome of bureaucracy. I have never seen so many layers at an organization. You feel like an ant in the middle of a million other ants that look exactly like you.
