Pros

Federal Govt Worker. After 6 to 12 month probation period, you are elegible for any and every job you might be qualified for. Vehicle Mechanic position start off at GS-10 positions ($22 an hour). Equivalent to fleet work since there is a wide variety of vehicles and equipment to work on. Depending on location of U.S. determines types of vehicles you have more of. Northern teir bases have more snow equipment, while western locations have more all terrain assets. You work along and sometimes train young G.I.s how to wrench. Some are eager and some have no clue, but it's nice to see them learn. Overtime available when the Govt needs you, but don't feel obligated. Overall great enviorment.

Cons

Workload tends to rise during military deployments, which happens alot. But it's job security. Sometimes you tend to finish up after some military folks due to appointments. Still not to bad.

Pros

- Benefits package is outstanding - People are the salt of the Earth - Gives focus and drive to people - Encourages professional/personal growth - Fighting for your country under the banner of "World's Greatest Air Force" is awesome! - Constant Pay - 30-day vacation and Federal Holidays with the occasional 4-day Family Day

Cons

- Accessions to Officer from Enlisted is terrible - No Warrant Officer Program - It's possible to be the most educated and be the lowest ranking E-1 - Promotions is terrible...the Air Force claims performance-based promotion system yet, if this was true, more of the right people would get promoted - It is not a meritocracy!!! - Decisions in the Air Force are made by those who aren't experts in any one field i.e. pilots making decisions in civil engineering.

Cons

- You have to move around all the time. - A lot of the lower ranking people are unmotivated - Many of the senior leaders lose touch with reality.
