Leaderless and Disorganized

Pros

Unlimited PTO; work from home.

Cons

Terrible, short-sighted leadership. Everything is a panic and a fire drill all the time. No work-life balance. Despite having unlimited PTO and working from home, the inept leaders will find a way to ruin all of that for you with their lack of planning and jumping from one thing to the next. If you're trying to work on a project that should take a few days anywhere else, at Upwork it either take weeks, months, or years to make any progress because some spineless "director" will come tell you to drop everything and work on something completely unrelated to your job. It's always because the executive leadership team didn't have much of a plan, or couldn't communicate their plan coherently to the rest of the company, and middle management is mostly comprised of spineless yes-people, so it seems like everything is done on-the-fly. Although the culture is generally okay, Upwork is run by a small clique of insiders. Your career advancement will plateau, or even turn sharply downward, if you don't get on the inside of that clique. Feels a lot like high school at times.

Pros

Had market potential given the shift towards remote work over the last year.... but they didn’t harness it as an competitive advantage to get ahead.

Cons

Have you ever seen an organization from which the best performers run away screaming? Look no farther than Upwork. The bdrs are literally running away from the epic leadership dysfunction.... lack of promotions...and internal politics. In the last few months, there has been a mass exodus of the BEST performers including leadership. What does that say when the only talent that is actually hitting quota is leaving?????????? Don’t expect to make any money as most aren’t. Instead of focusing on the advantage they have being leader in the market, they focus on everything else and butchered every strategy. Don’t believe what they tell you about growing pains. There’s growing pains and then there’s Upwork. A train wreck in slow motion. Competition is catching up. The sales leadership is the worst. Absolutely mismanaged, changing strategy aimlessly, and instead of focusing on identifying what works and harnessing that - they force strategies that just don’t work and refuse to admit their mistakes and fix. Will blame everything and everybody else and never take accountability. Most of the sales organization is nowhere near quota and have limited support. Leads are a disaster..... management is aware and refuses to address. Nobody knows why because everybody in the sales org is begging for a better leads system and have been for months. Micromanagement and PIPs. Metrics are constantly changing and never for the benefit of the employees. In general with the new CEO the culture has gradually shifted from fun to fear. They like to say nice things and tie them up in a pretty bow but do not practice anything that they preach. While preaching unity, they blindside fired a huge chunk of their sales organization and from the current state it seems they are trying to clean out the rest. HR is nonexistent. Promised a bunch of people promotions if they hit certain metrics, and then backtracked when they did. Currently looking for a new job as I’m sure the rest of the BDRs are too.

Toxic Management

Pros

The only thing I can think of is that it's remote

Cons

As a former employee of Upwork, I had high hopes when I initially joined the company. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by a toxic management culture and ineffective communication practices. Toxic Management: During my time there, I felt that the management lacked transparency and accountability. Instead of fostering a supportive environment where employees could thrive, the leadership frequently dismissed constructive feedback and criticism, leaving many team members feeling unheard and undervalued. It seemed that promotions and recognition were based more on favoritism than merit, which demotivated those striving to advance through hard work. Passive-Aggressive Communication: Communication via Slack, which was the primary mode of internal messaging, became a source of anxiety rather than clarity. Managers would often send passive-aggressive messages that only added to the stress of the daily workload. Rather than addressing issues openly, conversations would often take on a tone that felt condescending, further contributing to a tense and uncomfortable work environment. Final Thoughts: While there were talented and dedicated people at Upwork, the prevailing management style undermined morale and productivity. I hope the company takes meaningful steps toward creating a healthier, more supportive culture for its employees.
