Pros
Waitrose, being part of the JLP seems to really value it's employees. It's not just for the newspapers. There are a lot of internal initiatives to ensure that partners are happy and any concerns are addressed. Real sense of camaraderie between partners. When people actually kind of like their job they tend to get along. Pay range is wide and generally very good. Up there with some of the best in the industry and further boosted with a yearly bonus which is dependant on company performance. Benefits package is also generous, and available to all partners, not just veterans. Discount on several UK attractions, event tickets etc. Discount alone puts this job above the competition. Between Waitrose and John Lewis everything you possibly might want is stocked and discount can be generous. Larger stores are perfect for students or part-timers. It's common to see Partners do extra hours over the Summer before term starts.
Cons
Progression is available but slow moving. A lot of regular partners have been earmarked for managerial/team leader roles but a lack of available positions makes the process slow. Politics (in individual branches, not across the company) dictates some progression which is a shame to see but Partners are quick to call that out. Smaller stores may be more limited in available hours/flexibility. Be prepared to put in extra time over the holidays. It isn't necessarily compulsory but it is expected that Partners do extra hours when it gets busy at Christmas etc.
