Pros

In a good situation with competent management, Walgreens can be a decent place to work. Without it, it can be a hard row to tow. "Family friendly" is an understatement; W takes hiring friends and family and working in one's neighborhood quite seriously. That said, there is a concerted emphasis on basic competency and speed. Personal accountability for employees is taken seriously. For some, the hours may make things really conducive to family life.

Cons

Though I sincerely think that they make a decent effort at training and education, training can be somewhat uneven, even though Walgreens offers online training sessions in stores. Beyond one's initial two weeks, there is a steep learning curve on the tricks of the system. The friends-and-family referral thing can be difficult if you don't have close family or friends to vouch for you. Same thing with working in one's neighborhood--if you like it, great. But some people need or want a little bit of a commute to accommodate kids, school, etc.. Their insistence on personal information borders on intrusive, and the payoff (financial and moral) for the effort demanded can be sometimes low. For me, the hours required to work per day differ significantly from most others in the industry, and cause one to have to work more hours per week to make full time.

Pros

The pay is rather good for a retail business. There is a decent amount of advancement opportunities. Good 401k and benefits.

Cons

Budget cuts have really hurt a lot of people No overtime allowed for managers anymore. The expectations of what to get done are still the same though.
