Two case studies and behavioral questions.
The case studies are quite analytical and focus on being able to translate a lot of information into metrics.. Case studies are not necessarily financial.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
A time that you went out of your way to help someone?
I applied online. I interviewed at Capital One in Jan 2022
Interview
Capital One's interview process is ridiculous. I came from a background in banking, have a graduate degree, and had never heard of a case interview. Sure the CEO might have started in consulting but at the end of the day Capital One is a bank. If they want to hire anyone with actual banking experience, then they've probably never heard of a case interview. I prepared for my first 'mini case' for about 24 hours in total over 5 days. I only had 5 days because the recruiter called and set up my interview quickly. I completed the case interview and followed all the rules/process/and got the RIGHT answer and still got rejected. Before the case interview, I met with the hiring manager who was super cool and excited about my resume and told me his boss was as well. So I have a hiring manager at director level and a senior director or higher excited about hiring me before the case interview. At this point the case interview feels like a formality because it has NOTHING to do with the role. But I studied, correctly solved the case, and had a great conversation with the caser. Really not sure what went wrong but if they have management who want to hire you and this ridiculous case interview that has nothing to do with banking is the reason you're rejected, then they are running their company horribly. I'd already read the bad reviews here on GlassDoor about the cutthroat culture, annual layoffs, and politics of getting a good rating each year, but after my experience I can say don't waste your time on C1. If you are a graduate with no real banking/finance/etc experience and can study for case interviews for months then go for it. But if you are a banking/finance professional with real world experience don't waste your time. None of the other big banks would put candidates through this ridiculous process. And they pay the same. Capital One: get it together and drop the case interviews for anyone who is mid career with actual banking experience.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Mini case interview was about calculating ROE for an apartment building. Had nothing to do with the role.
I applied online. I interviewed at Capital One (Chicago, IL) in Sep 2021
Interview
Interview process is in 2 stage. First a mini case and second is power day comprised of 3 case interviews and 1 product. Mini case interviews are mostly on market entry and calculation of breakeven point and profit margins. Pretty direct. Power day cases are more complicated at least for 2 rounds. Here I want to emphasize on the quant. Cases are 80% quant driven and 20% framework. Multiple variable, weighted average, numbers at different levels such as thousands, millions and billions. Its better just to prepare on quant. Product interview has two parts, first they give a an object such a s clock or dustbin and ask 10 features you would like to add. Second part they would want you to talk about one of your favorite app or product.
