Pros

I liked many of the people I worked with. The projects I worked on were very interesting to me and there was plenty of opportunities to make lateral moves to other organizations if you got bored or wanted a new challenge.

Cons

Management frequently took credit for employee work, would never approve something if it didn't come from their team or themselves--they wanted all the glory, so things never got accomplished. I've been gone for 4 years now and my former coworkers are still on the same projects with no meaningful progress since I left. Salary boosts were rare--there was never enough money to give cost of living raises to anyone but management.

Pros

In the big scheme of things, the company does most things right. Competitive pay for inside reps, the best vacation package in the business, benefits including 401k w/ match, FSA's, HSA's, etc., incredible amount of community involvement, and a concerted push towards work/life balance, including work-from-home a couple days a week. Overall, excellent place to work.

Cons

It's extremely difficult to be promoted to a higher pay scale without jumping ship and jumping into a new role altogether. Once you're in a role, there's a glass ceiling until you go to another department. Also, they don't pay people who are transferring from inside to outside roles with comparable pay to what they would pay direct outside hires from outside the company. Finally, new performance criteria leads to a very short leash for those who don't meet the ever-increasing growth numbers which are based on historicals, which can be difficult if you had a superb year the prior year, but cannot repeat your uncommonly high attainment.

Sounds like you have had a positive experience with Dell overall - that's great! However, you do bring up some good ideas and suggestions regarding movement across organizations. Very helpful feedback - thank you!

Pros

For reference, I came to Dell through an acquisition of Perot Systems for their enterprise services - in my case, serving their healthcare customers. There were some very sharp people at Perot, and they managed the IT operations for some of the biggest IDNs in the country.

Cons

Unfortunately, most of the very good people left. The acquisition of Perot set up a culture collision between Dell and Perot. It became extremely challenging to get anything done, and multiple colleagues were constantly working at odds with each other. There became a leadership vacuum as turnover started to skyrocket.
