Pros

Well you get paid ! And the staff discount helps the poor pay and long hours.

Cons

As others have said . Soul destroying. Higher management have not got a clue . All are mostly ex Uni people . No life skills and are just puppets . Your card can be marked as a store manager / area manager and pressure is put on you to leave . Some management have been offered pay outs to leave but you have to sign a solicitors letter to keep quiet on how they treat you . They seem to walk all over their staff .

Pros

15% staff discount, Can be fun if you're on shift with the right people

Cons

I'm working my last shift today and I can honestly say I've never felt so relieved! Started part time as a retail assistant around college last year, loved my job. Had loads of staff and always got on well with everyone in the store. About six months in I was suddenly forced to go to a different store 40 minutes away from home, spent a total of 6 weeks there running shifts as a supervisor which I had never done before in my life and had never been trained for. This also broke my car because of the many miles I racked up, which meant I had to go and buy a new car on finance to be able to keep travelling to this other shop. I then rack up nearly 2000 miles on my brand new car. Constantly told the manager and area manager I wanted to be back in my own store and basically was told to get over it. Then finally got back into my own store and was running shifts as a supervisor every week, still being paid as a sales assistant! Only in January this year I was promoted to supervisor. Was never allowed to take my holidays and even when granted I was then expected to work during my holidays. Would be phoned at 5am saying they needed me in work. Ended up turning my phone off at night just to get them to leave me alone on my days off. Horrible. The place has left me depressed and on the verge of a breakdown! Doing stocktake every Saturday until midnight, sometimes later, and always unpaid after 10pm. NEVER WORK HERE. Also, if you think you can spend time with your family or even take the day off to move house, think again!

Pros

Lots of opportunity for overtime due to store being understaffed.

Cons

As a student at the time and on a 12 hour contract, I had the opportunity to take a significant amount of overtime due to the store being understaffed, however, this crept up to being more than full time hours (40+) due to staff summer holidays. Staff were not in a position to refuse overtime, or even acquire shifts that suited their needs (as someone who relies on public transport, my shifts often began at 6am, even though I had specified this to the manager in an interview). Gloves were not provided as part of uniform, which was quite ridiculous when staff would be unpacking frozen food deliveries for hours. Box cutters were also rare to come by.
