Pros

Hopper offers competitive pay, good benefits, and some interesting problems to solve. The company is remote with no obligation to be in office. Work life balance is what you make it- PTO requests are not denied, don’t be afraid to take it! If you don’t stand up for yourself it will not be given to you. Your mileage may vary based on team culture. Overall infrastructure is pretty good, they are not afraid to spend money where it is needed. Data is essential to their business operation. Growth has been fast.

Cons

Management is hyper focused on maintaining their own image within the company. Much of senior management is in power not because of merit, but because of longevity and rapid growth—- these decision makers appear to lack the requisite skills needed in their position and are threatened by exemplary new hires that may out shine them or shed light on their weak technical skills. This is especially true about the (post layoff) senior management. Being in the in-crowd is crucial for success here. Hopper, although claiming to be data driven, seems to use data as a scapegoat for management or market failure. Data scientists do not have the power internally to say “there is no evidence to support that” they are pressured to provide evidence that management is correct in their thoughts, and when projects fail, the blame is always laid on the data team. Be careful here future data engineers, ego rules all, whole teams are seemingly randomly laid off and you will be tasked with proving senior managers right, instead of tasked with providing solid correct answers. This has proven evident several times throughout the companies history of layoffs and erratic restructuring. Online Travel Agencies success and growth tend to be tied very closely to the price of airfare. Protection products may correlate to Covid fear. Think critically when analyzing future potential in this industry. Employees and positions are Hopper have recently seen changes in titles for data scientists/engineers/analysts/etc— be careful what you sign up for; Your job may actually consist of you being a SQL monkey for non-technical PMs.

Pros

- The people are brilliant (literally the smartest people I have ever worked with) - Strong engineering culture - Everyone is super helpful and humble - Name carries a lot of weight in industry and has helped me secure a lot of interviews elsewhere

Cons

My biggest issue (and the reason that this is a 4-star review instead of 5) is how the company handled the COVID crisis. The layoffs are understandable due to the state of the travel industry, but just weeks before when people were buying a lot of flights in reaction to the dip in airline prices, there was an almost unanimous vibe of celebration in slack. When someone called out that we were essentially celebrating a global pandemic, people who are very high up in the company publicly shamed him which really rubbed me the wrong way. Additionally, when this was brought up to HR, nothing was really done about it. I feel like this really shed some light on the general mindset of a lot of the people working at Hopper. There is a true obsession with the success of the company - and while I don't think that it is necessarily a bad thing, it can definitely be pushed too far. Basically, it becomes an echo chamber where success is the goal at any cost, I think there are other considerations to be had.

Pros

Talent -- For a long time, Hopper's greatest strength was in recruitment. The company had a knack for recruiting talented, resilient and above all loyal individuals. Great health benefits -- Very generous health benefit plan. Cool offices/flexible work from Home policy -- The office is well equipped with snacks and such. It's comfortable and spacious. Used to subsidize transport -- but that may have recently ceased in COVID cutbacks.

Cons

No direction or vision -- Hopper is like a teenager with growing pains and an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex. It has a vague idea of what it wants, but makes major business decisions without thorough research. Which is very ironic for a "data driven start-up". Zero accountability -- The company motto appears to be: We will (maybe, probably) deal with this later. Weak leadership -- When things are good, the company is functional, but we all know that a company's strength is measured by its response in times of crisis. Hopper's is abysmal. When things go wrong, leadership flails, forgets how to speak or listen. Ethically bankrupt -- Internally, the company has some serious and unaddressed issues with nepotism and discrimination. Forget merit, performance or competence: if you are well liked or well connected you will go further. I won't even go into detail about how the company treats its customers. All you need to know is available free of charge on Trustpilot. Company culture, what company culture? -- What does Hopper stand for? Besides trees, I could not tell you ‘cause we all know that “customer obsession“ thing is a big reach.
