Pros

There's ample opportunity to work on cutting edge stuff. Anyone who enjoys systems programming and is good at it will have a job at IBM.

Cons

- The belts in the company are extremely tight right now. Despite record profits, IBM is not investing the money in their employees. - Getting your job outsourced is a constant fear. - attempting to complete any task is a constant battle. The bureaucracy at IBM is worse than its reputation.

Pros

- Encouragement to be the best you can be. - Learning opportunities are good. - Management encourages creative thinking.

Cons

- Management will work you to the bone. They are trying to do too much with too few resources, constantly making me feel overwhelmed, and in the end unappreciated. - There are too many processes hindering productivity and causing frustration beyond belief. - Internal organizations don't always work well together. Getting help or cooperation from other organizations is problematic and another point of frustration.

Pros

Given the vast amount of IBM brands, it isn't difficult to find a position of interest if you invest the time in creating connections across the company, and happen to have a management chain that supports personal growth of their employees.

Cons

The only reason IBM is doing well right now is because budgets are being slashed left and right, employee morale is at an all time low and management (if you're unlucky) can be quite condescending and non responsive to employee needs. Keeping the staff happy is nowhere on the priority list. People are often expected to work extra long hours and weekends without any particular compensation, reward or acknowledgment. And the expectation isn't reflected in a request to come in but rather by assigning large amounts of work that don't actually make sense given a "normal" work day.
