Pros

Benefits are great, work-life balance can be good if you're an efficient worker with a good manager and you leverage that.

Cons

IP Agreements are extremely restrictive given the size of the company. Since IBM is into so many different areas of development, much of what you may be interested in working on externally they could reasonably claim ownership of. Your group may not work on anything remotely close to what you want to work on in your personal time, but IBM can still claim ownership of it because it falls under the wide open umbrella of the entire company's "actual or anticipated" business interests.

Pros

Stability, work-life balance, prestige, breadth of opportunities. IBM is a well-respected company and offers excellent understanding and support of a healthy work-life balance. Working from home is rarely a problem and is popular among myself and my coworkers. As long as the work gets done, management seems to care little whether you are in the office or working from home.

Cons

Easy to get pigeon-holed and thus dissatisfied with job and unable to move on to something else. Incompetence and seeming obliviousness of upper management. "Cutting edge" Web-2.0ish projects are few and far between and are generally lacking in features and sophistication.

Pros

The opportunities for education and personal growth within IBM are amongst the best in the business. Even when education budgets are slashed, the resources that IBM provides to its employees are amongst the broadest and most comprehensive. IBM is also very respectful of the balance of Work/Life, and takes great pride in providing flexible scheduling and location based working opportunities.

Cons

The best and brightest at IBM are often restrained from doing their best work because of the numerous interruptions and distractions that are constantly present. When a resource at IBM is discovered to be competent, their performance is hampered by their less competent peers. It's the law of averages working against a company that has the potential to be more innovative and more creative than most of the competition, but the large population that IBM takes pride in maintaining weighs it down.
