Pros

Used to be great place to work. Back when I started. That’s was years ago. Since then just went downhill

Cons

No real progression, you can’t go to head office. At all points you trying to leave store they block you, and they actually have said they now have too many people in head office so store colleagues cannot leave and stuck in stores. The pay is never reviewed at store level, you had business reviews which is great, but store is not based on performance at all, yet store manager is apparently exceeding everyone expectations by doing absolutely nothing, walking around store in his phone and not engaging with the team. Bad management in general, commercials or deputy SM don’t even last because they see how bad is this store/business. I could probably write an essay of how bad is it. Don’t know if it’s the store or business in general.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your honesty. We're disappointed to hear the concerns you’ve raised and would like to take this opportunity to apologise for how you felt during your time with us. This doesn’t sound like the way we do things at Marks and Spencer and completely goes against the values we've worked so hard to uphold, so we'll make sure your comments are fed back. As a business we want to make sure that all of our Colleagues feel supported and enjoy being a part of the Marks and Spencer family. We'd hope that our Colleagues know that they can raise their concerns to another Manager if they're not supported by their own, or reach out to their local Big Rep. We also have a team of Policy Specialists which thoroughly investigate all formal grievances raised. It would be great if you could contact our Line Manager Advisory Team (LMAS) via LMAS@marks-and-spencer.com, with your previous Colleague number, so that they can further look into the issues you've raised. Thank you for bringing these matters to our attention. Marks and Spencer

Pros

20% Employee discount. Employee benefits, including dental plan, salary sacrifice benefits (Cycle 2 Work, Tech4Home). Exclusive M&S credit card rate for employees.

Cons

No longer pay bonuses to customer advisors (senior management still receive millions). Staff are seen as a resource, not people. Workload difficult to manage with staff cuts. Pay isn't competitive compared to other retailers anymore. Weekend/late shifts often non-optional (dependent on store hours). Management often put procedure over employees needs (health conditions, changing hours). Few opportunities to progress without 'fitting the mould' (brown nosing, coming in early/staying later than paid for). Difficult to book time off work - holidays ceilings are filled within hours of allocation often.

Pros

Large corporation which is renowned worldwide which helps in future employment as you've worked in a recognised brand.

Cons

Awful working culture in the mens department. From my experience there was a real break down between all the teams and this resulted in a blame culture that was pretty toxic. The high staff turnover around my level (junior) whilst I was there, showed there was a real problem with workplace culture and didn't insight people to stay on. There wasn't the support or training available for the role either and I was expected to learn on the job - despite being told in interview stages that there was training available. It was much more of a learn on the job role but that may have been because of the team I was in - if there had been more of a mentor in that particular team maybe it would have been a better experience. The whole experience was pretty awful and HR weren't supportive or helpful in addressing any of the issues I faced.
