Pros

Free Friday lunches, really friendly and smart people, great new location in Santa Monica, and there's starting to be more of a corporate structure (which is desperately needed). Despite what I'm about to say under Cons, I think this place is going to get a lot better.

Cons

Employees are expected to work at an insane, frenzied speed. Upper management thinks they can do everyone's job better than them, and as a result, they get in their own way constantly. The owner loves to say that he hires people that are smarter than him. This is half true. He definitely hires people that are smarter than him, but he doesn't actually show that he values that hire, because he doesn't really let anyone do what they know best (to his defense, I think he's usually just trying to be helpful, but his helpful suggestions are not as helpful as he thinks they are). Nepotism runs rampant here; they went through a phase where a ton of fraternity brothers were hired, seemingly without much reason, and then found places where they could fit. Someone's (100% inexperienced) brother was also hired, given a VP title, and then his job duties were repeatedly changed because he couldn't do what he was being asked to do. There's a lot of that at XYZ. I think eventually they'll grow to a point where upper mgmt HAS to give up some control, and that will be a great day for everyone at that place. For right now, it's the place where creativity goes to die.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on your experience. We also thank you for offering some great constructive feedback. We would have to agree that we sometimes let our passion run into our actions. We’re definitely aware of that and have since put further mechanisms in place to spur autonomy and creativity throughout the process. We can also see how you can perceive nepotism. When many companies start out, they bring on the smartest people they can trust. Early on, these people tend to be those they have closely worked with in the past. But as they grow into successful early stage companies, they bring in the best people regardless of who they are. That’s why we have completely revamped our processes over the last two months in recruitment, performance management, and succession planning.

Pros

Open Kitchen, Free Lunches on Friday.

Cons

PLEASE BEWARE! If you find your way through the application process and accept their below market value offer, you’ll be ushered (often without choice) into one of two directions; the XYZ domain registry side or the payday loan media conglomerate of the business. The company is notorious for hiring and promoting friends and family over those seemingly more qualified for the open positions. The environment and culture that is preached from the top down is one of 60 hour work weeks, unaccountability, nepotism, lack of trust and disrespect for the team. This behavior trickles down to middle-management and employees frequently suffer the consequences. This helps explain the high-employee turnover with a team of 30 people 2-3 leave every month be greener pastures. The other positive reviews listed stating they will “listen” or that they are "customer focused" and there is "room to get involved" are comically fake. You can be 'promoted' by title one day and have all responsibilities pulled by the time you get back on Monday. Do not, under any circumstance, think this will be anything but an abusive professional relationship.

Thanks for taking a moment of your day to let us know how your experience was. We would like to start off by apologizing to you for not meeting your expectations. Our hope is that every person that walks through our doors as an employee or even a candidate would walk out having felt our passion and desire to be nothing short of the best. You have the right impression of us from the standpoint that we do work hard. While we acknowledge that not every company is for every person, I’m not exactly sure how you got “30 people …. 2-3 leave every month” type of figures. Factually speaking, we can assure you that this is not the case.

Pros

Because it's in Santa Monica, there are some talented minds that come through here. Lime is an interesting cafeteria across the street that has a good variety of food.

Cons

Immature megalomaniacs for leadership. This company could be so good if leadership weren't chasing away all the smart minds. The only ones who stick around or those that can't find a well paying job elsewhere. It's sad. Even HR's hands are tied and act as mere puppets to the leadership. Don't go to HR with "confidential" issues because, like I said, puppetry. If you're in mild disbelief of this, just go to LinkedIn, find past employees, and ask ANY of them. Do your research before joining organizations that lure you in and then abuse you, hoping that codependency is their retention strategy.

We certainly agree that there are smart minds at our office and we're always looking for ways to attract and retain top talent. Having said that, we're trying to be a lot better. I'm sorry you felt you couldn't go to HR with confidential issues. We always encourage our employees to go to management/HR with concerns and questions with the hopes that we can find a solution that works for everyone. We wish you the best in your ongoing journey to find the best fits for your talents. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help with next steps in your career.
