Pros

1 good Manger out of 4 that covered across 10 years Wages are not age dependant.

Cons

The Co-op has changed dramatically from when I started. We had more staff on providing a secure environment. Every new 'idea' from the top to make life easier brought a reduction in store hours. Even wearing headsets took hours away from the store. Most stores in N Ireland and probably rest of UK run on 1 on 1 in a large sized store leaving staff over worked with store needs and online order needs. Coop takes on all these online orders but I have seen a decline in staff on shifts to deal with this. Local regular customers even comment in distain at how much we do. This in turn makes the store a breeding ground for theft. I personally had my life threatened after the 3rd interaction with a customer with mental health issues. This in turn caused crippling anxiety along with store expectations. I am no snow flake but this threat made me fear for my safety leaving the store and as I was 1 on 1 with a young member of staff I had to call my family to attend while closing the store as it was closing time when it happened and I feared the mans return and follow through and before you state in your response that police should have been called I did and they attended next day as soon as they received the name as he was known for threats to life in his past.. The Manager at the time tried his upmost to elevate the stress on his staff but his hands were tied by head office. I had 4 managers come through my store and only 1 was a Leader. The rest sat in the office with the attitude 'I should not be on the floor' which breeds resentment. Hours dependant on sales is not fit for purpose, that system was for a production factory not retail. I had to leave this job which I once loved and was proud of.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for your long service with the Co-op. We recognise and understand the challenges you've described particularly around staffing, safety, and leadership visibility and how these can affect wellbeing and store culture. Your feedback reinforces the need for store leaders to be actively present and supportive on the shop floor. While some decisions are made centrally, we know their impact is felt locally, and that’s where leadership makes the biggest difference. We also encourage colleagues to escalate concerns beyond their immediate manager when needed whether to their operations manager or HR, as these are the routes that can drive change. Public platforms raise awareness, but direct conversations often lead to action. We appreciate your honesty and the time you gave to the business. Feedback like yours helps shape how we move forward.

Pros

Decent pay at TL level. Benefits.

Cons

Dont be drawn in by the benefits and friendly appearance that Co-op give on the outside. Basically zero training, you will given about 36 online modules to go through *in your own time*, but when on shift, you'll just be thrown on the shop floor to figure it out, absolutely no structure. It was obvious that I was just hired to fill a gap, and not actually respected as a colleague. The workload and expectations of late night colleagues is just ridiculous, especially when there are only 2 of you to do everything. Further to this, I was told that I personally was expected to physically stop shoplifters and recover stock. Clearly, the company, or at least my manager at the time, values stock and profit more than the health and wellbeing of their workers. I was hired on a part-time contract, but was given full time hours with no prior agreement, and this was not adjusted, despite my repeated conversations with the manager.

Thank you for leaving a review and for your feedback. We're sorry to hear of your experience with us. Our Customer Team Leader induction comprises of a combination of online modules and hands on training, all of which is covered within your working hours. We also believe that your interpretation of our policy on handling situations where you suspect shoplifting is taking place isn't correct. Where possible we ask that there is a "Safe challenge" and we do not ask that you physically intervene in any circumstances. We will reach out to the operations team to make sure that this aspect of our policy is made clear. Colleague safety is our prime concern and we ask that all incidents are reported on My Safety and to the police.

Pros

Working with lovely families in times of their grief/loss.

Cons

Appalling management system - all about selling their products rather than assisting grieving families. Meant to be an advocate for 'mental health wellbeing' - appalling behaviour from management doing the complete opposite. No gratitude whatsoever for long standing employees

Thank you for sharing your experience, and for your long-standing commitment to supporting families through difficult times. We’re proud of the care our colleagues provide, and we’re sorry to hear that your experience of management hasn’t reflected the values we stand for. We know how important it is that colleagues feel respected and supported, especially in emotionally demanding roles. If you haven’t already, we’d encourage you to raise concerns directly with your manager. If that doesn’t feel possible, you can contact our Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination (BHD) helpline in confidence by emailing bhd@coop.co.uk. This route is available to all current colleagues and ensures concerns are reviewed independently. We’re continuing to invest in leadership development and wellbeing support, and feedback like yours helps us understand where we need to do better.
