Pretty on the outside, rotten on the inside

Pros

At first it all looks impressive: a cool building, tons of snacks, and lots of busy people in Lightspeed t-shirts zipping around at high speed. It all looks so shiny and purposeful. And there are lots of presentations about how special and unique Lightspeed is, to rally the troops. But, as a previous reviewer commented, "it's all smoke and mirrors". Very soon you'll realize that the Lightspeed formula is to hire you young, underpay you, and then replace you when you burn out or can't reach unrealistic sales targets, or simply get tired of working a lot of unpaid hours. But hey, you get t-shirts and free beer every Friday. This is no place to build a career, as advancement is only for the inner circle, and the politics and cronyism are fierce. There are some amazingly dedicated and kind people at Lightspeed - many are in Support - and they're undervalued. Lightspeed is a sales company. The products have many flaws and aren't robust, and the focus is on short-term planning for more features, more sales offices, and more sales. Although there is free food and booze, and bus passes, the pay is low, there's no RRSP, or bonuses. It's all based on you being out the door in a few months anyway, so no investment in employee engagement or retention, or career development. There are huge parties dedicated to drinking. Actions speak louder than words, and that sums up the Lightspeed ethos.

Cons

* sweatshop, revolving door treatment of employees * unrealistic work hours and sales targets

Thank you for sharing and I’m sorry to hear that your experience at Lightspeed didn’t match what we intend for our employees. The happiness of our employees is our priority and we’d like to ensure that we address complaints that we hear. We are a growing organization and we are always looking at new ways to support employee growth internally. We are implementing further training opportunities for new leaders, as well as career development for those who seek it. We’re always looking for ways that we can enhance employee benefits and we don’t consider pay as a silo, but rather as a larger part of a general compensation plan. As our company evolves, so does our culture. We have built a new social committee that will be responsible for organizing company-wide and department-wide events meant for people with different tastes. Thank you for the feedback, your input is valuable.

Pros

In customer facing roles (which is the main focus of the company), you either work on the support side or the sales side. On the support side, you will work with truly incredible people and supportive, approachable, wonderful management. On the sales side, you have the potential to make a lot of money. It's also a great office, nice to work on Macs, and the paid OPUS pass is nice. This is an incredibly fast paced environment so you will definitely learn quickly. The CEO is also the company founder, and a really sweet guy who truly cares about the product and makes time for everyone.

Cons

With these two customer-facing roles, there are two options: on the support side, you will not make any money (between $15-$17 an hour). Lightspeed is a sales company above all else - much more focused on sales than product - so working on the sales side, you can expect to make tons of money, however you won't have a life and you'll live at the office. The sales team spend all their time together so it turns into this dramatic, incestuous family. They also promote not based on who portrays the best leadership qualities, but based on favouritism, and even more recently, who gets romantically involved with select executives.

Dear former employee - one of the great challenges of Glassdoor is the inability to have a conversation. We are truly disappointed that your experience at Lightspeed was not a positive one. We would very much appreciate the opportunity to hear from you directly so we can learn from this experience so that we may grow as an employer. Though of course you are under no obligation to do so (and would not benefit personally given you've left), if you're open to discussing, please reach out to us at hr.confidential@lightspeedhq.com. We promise that your anonymity will be preserved. We seek only honest feedback to help make our organization the best that it can be, and most importantly, to reach the highest levels of satisfaction among our employees. We sincerely hope to hear from you. Thank you.

Pros

Lightspeed is a very fun company to work for with great values. In order to be successful it is important to have a positive attitude and a desire to overachieve. Benefits offered are great and most (if not all) are very friendly.

Cons

Performance driven, if you don't perform you will fall to the side. You are expected to work hard which includes many long days.

Thanks for your feedback. We are thrilled to hear of your appreciation of our benefits package and we will certainly use this feedback to continue to make our benefits even better. We understand how performance-driven departments can be both exciting and challenging, and we do our best to recognize and appreciate everyone for their hard work - after all, you are the performance drivers of our organization! Our goal is to build careers and nurture talent, which has made us have ongoing conversations on how to best do that. We are feeling optimistic about the new initiatives about to come to light!
