Pros

Staff Discount Flexi-time and remote working Good pension Great benefits (cycle to work, kit, cheap cinema etc)

Cons

The software engineering department went from an amazing place to work to terrible very quickly. There were so many talented and amazing people who were doing great work, then a sudden restructure and cost savings ruined everything. Everyone feared for their jobs and because of getting rid of our office, people were forced to quit rather than face the move to a different office outside of London. The SE department used to have a wonderful agile, startup culture and then became political and corporate very quickly. I had some amazing times working in this department but thanks to the IT Director and other higher ups this wonderful place has been ruined.

Pros

Once you get the hang of working in the bureau the work is really easy. Counting and selling money, cashing up, etc. definitely requires numeracy skills but nothing really complicated ever happens and at times it can be really laid back with few customers. So once you get your head round all the maths and how to count money its a dream job-- Sit on a seat most of the day and do relatively straight forward transactions.

Cons

There are loads of extra anti-fraud rules to pick up and a very steep learning curve when you start. You have to get your head round calculator maths, foreign currencies and counting loads of money in front of a customer- all while also keeping up with regular anti-fraud detection tests. The worst thing about this job is that you just get paid the same as everyone else in the store. Which is a great salary for retail but it won't take long before you realise you're doing a lot more than people on the shop floor and that a lot more is expected of you. Also it gets mental busy at half terms and summer holiday time. You need to keep your head because its so easy to make mistakes when there are queues or pressure to finish cashing up on time

Pros

Great pay for the role No set targets, it isn't a pressured environment Not a typical 9-5 monday to friday job (this can be a pro or con) Great benefits through being linked with HSBC bank Preferential rate on M&S credit card as a perk Huge number of employee discounts at large retailers

Cons

Can feel micromanaged and like you're still a school child the way you are treated by management Managers will use favouritism as a tool to who is allowed to progress and who is not Working bank holidays Over christmas you can be working until 9pm depending on which store you are working in Your job title is misleading as you don't really do what a bank assistant does, most of your day is spent on the M&S shop floor with the retail team trying to sell credit cards.
