Pros

Discount is generous, although they put up prices in the store under the main London office, which most staff get lunch in.

Cons

14 months ago M&S launched a culture charter that included we refresh & recharge. The MD had recently joined the company and there was an intro video where he talked about how important work/life balance is and how weekend working shouldn't be the norm. Roll forward 12 months, the culture charter is gone, flexible working feels like it has been thrown out the window and if you do not answer messages over a weekend, you are not up to the job, Culture has been replaced with a behaviors, and now priority is being selfless for M&S. Despite going to with a strategy of attracting family shopping, your family, and your flexibility do not matter. There is a toxic blame culture at the senior leadership level and it is filtering down to those within the London office. If you want to balance your life, do not work at M&S, they will not support you and yours.

Pros

Good discount, varied workday, progression is encouraged, and there is a mostly good community amongst salesfloor staff.

Cons

Management are not your friends, despite their desperation to seem so, and too many of them know too little about policy & the practicalities of day-to-day running depts. Commercial managers are particularly out of touch. Policies are increasingly punitive, particularly towards disabled staff who require accommodations or absence. Lots of casual racism, classism, and transphobia on the salesfloor at all levels, which goes unchallenged despite M&S claiming a steadfast commitment to diversity. Known culture of managers sexually harassing & seeking sexual relationships with new, young staff they have power over. During pregnancy I was unofficially warned about time off work (official absence policy is waived, because pregnancy is an ongoing medical issue) and upon applying for a transfer during maternity leave was told by my potential new store “well, we’d really prefer to hire someone who doesn’t have the commitment of a small baby at home” which is illegal. In 2018-2019 I witnessed multiple violations of the Equality Act towards customers, and three different managers attempted to intimidate me into dropping my complaint. Join Usdaw — they’re not recognised by M&S but you can still receive rep support & advice, including having a rep present in meetings. You likely WILL need their support at some point.

Pros

The company pension contributions are good. Salaries also pretty good.

Cons

Absolutely brutal, cut throat, corporate culture. On par with some of the harshest banking environments. No empathy from leadership. People trampling on each other trying to climb the ladder. Some senior employees promoted for length of service rather than capability. The office is far too small for the number of staff using it and is not very inviting. The tech is out dated, clunky and not moving in the same direction as tech industry leaders. Company meetings are frequently booked over the lunch period, so staff are expected to work all the way through the day. Anyone in a non-engineer role must attend the office 3 days per week.
