Pros

Your co-workers and learning experience are the only positive aspects of this company.

Cons

I want to keep this brief, as it’s not something I’d typically do but seeing positive reviews on here frustrates me so much. 2 years ago, sitting in Meltwater my Managing Director called all the managers into the room and showed us negative reviews on here. That MD then asked us to write positive reviews to push the “negative” ones down. This type of attitude and personality perfect describes the entire companies business practice. I’m shocked that this company hasn’t fallen to pieces yet, and is still riding on “fake it to you make it”. They sell the least important product a firm could have... I’m not going to ramble on here, you can read the rest of the horror stories. They are all true. It only took me quitting Meltwater to realize how terrible of a place it really is. Each employee suffers from Stockholm syndrome. Not to mention, go to any other company and you’ll make more money and work less hours.

Pros

- A good entry level sales organization for students straight out of college - No sales experience required! 90% of hires are 22/23-year-old recent graduates, soul-searching with what they should do after college - Great opportunity to match with a romantic partner. I know, sounds silly, but speaking from years of experience roughly 30% of Meltwater employees are currently dating or married to another employee. The executive leadership even jumped on this bandwagon as the majority of them are married with kids to someone they met at the company #incest (HR recently created a new dating policy with guidelines) I guess it's true what they say - shared trauma makes for compatibility! - Learn basic sales fundamentals from prospecting, cold calling, lead generation, product demonstrations, negotiating + closing. The "full sales cycle" - Given a lot of responsibilities. Feel that your position on the team can make a big difference month in and month out. - Opportunity to manage several people within your first 12-24 months - Clear career progression - your managers will be transparent with what you need to do to progress up the ladder - Super fun company events. (shortage with recent company-wide cost-cutting) - Feel rewarded by your peers when you sell, hit target, and achieve your goals

Cons

- Very low base salary across the board for all titles. The salary model has stayed the same since 2007 and is far below the average market value. 48k base salary in San Fran, NYC, and other large cities will have you eating frozen hot dogs on your couch after trying to pay rent. - No work/life balance. You are asked to come in at 8:00 am and leave at 6:30 pm. The management team has a slew of tactics to pressure and guilt trip you so they can achieve their personal targets through your work. - Monthly quotas are achieved through pressure sales tactics. The companies DNA lays in this and will forever practice this sales methodology. The churn rate of the clients is so incredibly high because no employees care about them. They need to make a sale to pay their rent another day. - VERY immature company. The entire company (literally 99.9% of the employees) have only worked at Meltwater for their entire career as we don't hire externally. Feels like you are stuck in a high school sitcom as your Area Directors gossip about recent college grads on a regular basis. - Recent changes to commission structure have been enforced due to a company-wide cost-cutting movement. Much harder to make a commission off the deals you sell. Things are no longer as fun. - Dressing the company for sale with the Private Equity from Vista Equity Partners all major internal cost-cutting. Less focus on making sure employees are happy with external events. Bi-Annual kickoff canceled - probably never doing one again. - Leadership is no longer excited. Everyone walking around like dead robots. - Glorified cult. Drink the Kool-Aid or fail. - Several people on the sales team, in all offices, openly talk about how they hate their lives on a daily basis. It's an unwritten rule that nobody is actually happen working here. Jokes are made about quitting or getting fired as being a good thing.

Pros

Hardly any. My first manager was great though and I continue to stay in touch with her. Also closing days are great if your on quota.

Cons

I don’t think I could say enough in this section. First of all the managing director played favorites more than anyone I have ever seen. She would call out people for messing up out loud in front everyone but yet when one of her “favorites” would literally do the exact same thing she ignored it and never said a lick of anything. Management is incredibly unprofessional as they dislike when any of the sales consultants share their opinion or, god forbid, disagree with anything they say. This company preys on newly graduated recruits who don’t know what it’s like to have a first full time job by working them to death and not allowing them to have personal lives. The quotas are set unreasonably high and if the office is not on quota, the directors doesn’t know how to handle it. They freak out by blaming their teams for not working hard enough even though each person is prospecting until 11pm every night. I would be weary of any ambiguous 5 star reviews for this company as when I was there we directed to go to this website and leave a good review to artificially boost their score to attract more unknowing candidates. You might have the opportunity to make a lot of money but make no mistake, this company is absolutely horrible. I worked in a relatively small office and very soon after starting a total of 10 people left in my office alone and were replaced. The turnover here is ridiculous and they literally have meetings year after year to figure out how to keep more employees. In order to explain this turnover to any new employees they tell them that those people just didn’t want to work or were lazy which couldn’t have been more incorrect. There were tons of people that left that had stellar sales records and worked incredibly hard; they just hated the company and how it took over their lives. On top of all of the stress of trying to sell enough product each month to hit high quotas the directors micromanage to a ridiculous degree. All of the sales consultants and sales success staff accurately described it as a “big brother” atmosphere. Also, the upper management surround themselves with “yes men” and “yes women” as they are so absorbed in their own opinions on how to run things they are not open to hearing ideas their employees have. This is a terrible quality for any leader to have. Leaving this company was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Thanks for your review and sorry that you feel this way about your time at Meltwater. Across our 20+ offices in the US, I cannot speak to every Managing Director's management style, but we do invest a lot in our managers so that they can successfully lead teams and develop their teams. What you've described is not consistent with our values or the culture we want to build. We can always improve in these areas, so thanks for your feedback.
