Bait & Switch

Pros

Steady employment / not a lot of layoffs Somewhat flexible schedule Every other Friday off

Cons

Most jobs are bait & switch — no one on my team thought they would be doing the work they are doing. I hear the same from other groups. I have applied and interviewed for 4 different roles here and each role had completely different tasks/assignments/responsibilities than what was discussed and or posted on the job listing. Access and equipment issues are constant problems. Either you don’t have (working) equipment, the software, the software licenses to do what you need to do or you don’t have the access/permissions to do what you need to do. By the time all of this is sorted out, the task is over/dumped and it’s on to a new task with these same issues. Bottle necking of work — many people with little to do or are waiting on data to go forward. See people online all day or talking / not busy. Then there are a few people who the work bottlenecks through and they are always swamped and work crazy hours. Poor communication — upper level will know it needs certain info or tasks done weeks ahead of time and won’t mention it until a week or even sometimes a day or two before it’s due, then mention it. After people work / stay late, holidays, weekends trying to complete something they should have had weeks to do, the results are trashed or not looked at and this happens a lot.

Pros

Good pay and some good programs, but that’s not worth putting up with all the other headaches that come with a job at Northrop Grumman.

Cons

Work/life balance is nonexistent. The corporate team micromanages everyone. Having your own creative ideas is looked down upon. The people that thrive are the ones that sit with their heads down and do just as they’re told. Tools and access needed in order to effectively do your job are not provided. If you are below the director level your opinion and input doesn’t matter. Short, sometimes impossible, deadlines are constantly expected to be met. Team morale is the lowest I’ve ever seen in any company I have worked for. Fosters a “dog eat dog” culture. It’s impossible to move up unless your management is willing to fight extensively for your career growth.

Pros

Northrop Grumman is a great place to work if you are a seasoned professional who values your life outside your job. If you work overtime, you get overtime pay at 100%, which is fantastic. As is pretty standard for the Defense industry, there is a program called 9/80, whereby if you work for 9 hours a day, you get every other Friday off. It's pretty great. There some tuition reimbursement, but it is contingent on your manager approving it. Up to 6% 401(k) matching with a 3 year vesting cliff is nice as well. Lastly, Defense is a very stable industry that will always be around and never outsourced, which gives you enormous job security.

Cons

Being a defense contractor, the pace of work is painfully-slow. Contracts are always delayed by months, which can be very frustrating for young professionals looking to make a splash in their career and stand out among the masses. Moreover, there is a huge problem with knowledge sharing. The old guard is retiring or getting grumpy at all the work they are doing to support their programs because their colleagues of 20-30 years are retiring. There is incredible disorganization in onboarding materials and no clear system for how to learn the way Defense work gets done. Directors will point you to intranet websites with broken links, and there are few human beings who are dedicated to your continuous learning. It's all on you to ask questions, which makes you feel like a pest. Lastly, senior management feels immensely disconnected from frontline managers and their engineers. They talk in lofty terms without understanding how hollow and aimless their strategies are.
